this past weekend i turned the key in the lock to open my hatch on my 1988 iroc. the hatch released per usual, motor operated fine coming up. then went to close the hatch and it latched well, but motor would not power hatch down flush. no motor action in either direction, now. hatch is stuck in "released" position, even when latched. i've still got power to the red wire coming in, so it's not a fuse. no motor noise, so it's not stripped gears. (been there, done that). Haynes and Chilton's manuals are no help, since neither seemed to realize that the wiring harness goes to the rear hatch latch.
anyone have any ideas or better yet, experience with this problem?
any help would be appreciated.

THANKS FOR THE RESPONSE, BUT I DON'T THINK IT'S THE MOTOR, BECAUSE IT RAN "UP" SMOOTHLY. IN ORDER TO RUN "DOWN" IT SHOULD JUST REVERSE POLARITY, BUT I CAN'T FIND A WIRING DIAGRAM ANYWHERE IN ORDER TO TEST. I BELIEVE IT MIGHT BE A SWITCH. I REPLACED THE RELAY, BUT NO DIFFERENT RESULT. ANYONE HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH THE WIRING ON THIS? THINK THE SENSOR PLATE NEAR THE LATCH (WITH THE 4 RECTANGULAR CONTACTS) HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT?
THANKS,

The '92 isn't much different from the '88, IIRC.

The hatch pull down motor has probably gone out. Same thing happened on my 88 Firebird. Pop in a new motor and you should be good to go. If it just quite working it's most likely the motor. Not much to those things. A contact switch on the hatch door, and a motor that activates it two directions

Hmm, should I ...

Thanks, Lou! Finally, got some free time this weekend and used the wiring diagram provided. After a little investigative disassembly and a couple jumper wires to my cordless drill battery, my suspicions were confirmed. Motor still good in both directions! However, the "reversing switch" had gone bad. GM part #20614880, completely unavailable in the entire US. DOH!
More ambitious disassembly of this switch (drilled rivets) revealed only gummed contacts. Cleaned, reassembled and it works! Woohoo! I should have taken pics to help out others, but was stealing away wrench time, whenever I could find it, so had to make it quick. Feel free to email me, if you've got questions, trying to replicate this fix.

During this adventure, I also discovered a guy online, who refurbishes these switches and sells a ton of hard to find 3RD gen stuff, including lots of NOS parts.
Figured I'd pass on the link. www.Top-DownSolutions.com

Thanks for the help and have a blessed day!
