AustinThirdGen.Org _ Gatherings & Events _ Second Annual Texas State Gathering, 2011

Posted by: Stephen Jan 4 2011, 12:54 AM

EDIT: Here is the link on TGO. http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/south-central-region/605025-second-annual-texas-statewide.html

We ready to do this? I'm thinking much earlier in the year, like in Spring. It was WAY, WAY, WAY too hot last year! Defiately more shade vs just in an open parking lot.

Do we just do a simple hang-out gathering like last year? Or do we want to do Awards type stuff? That would mean $ for registration, to cover the cost for awards & such. Rental location? Pretty sure I can get us a good deal on those, through one of my old jobs that does trophies/award plaques/etc. I KNOW I can get good deals on banners, that could be reused from year to year, by only changing out the lettering (numbers for the year) or any graphic we wanted to put on there.

I know I could set us up with a good photographer, just dunno what he'd charge us. But I'm pretty sure he wouldn't mind doing photo shoots for attendees & selling the pics.

I'm gonna run this thread for a week, maybe 2 before posting on TGO about it.

cool... subscribing so I get the details. Let me know what ya'll decide, and I'll help spread the word to north texas

I was thinking about a DFW gathering on March 19th, but I'll gladly concede that date if it works good for all of you.

Posted by: 58mark Jan 4 2011, 08:59 AM

you know guys, for all the discussion and hype about the famous "thirdgenfest" in Crete, IL.. last year they only had 70 cars there.

In its very first year the texas gathering had half of that. If somebody can come up with a cool concept for what they want this thing to look like, long term, it could be built into a southern USA event that people talk about year round.

I could see people coming from at least 500 miles away to come to this, including OK, LA, AR ,and NM. I think having judges, prizes, and sponsors could really help.

I have alsmot unlimited bandwidtth available on my server. If anybody wants to come up with an available domain name that I can register and create a website for, I'll do it

Hello,
I can provide name tags again if everyone liked the ones I did last year. They were kinda last minute but seemed to work out okay.

Depending on how big this gets special event shirts would be cool also!

Let me Know

Thanks for starting this thread Stephen, I know I had mentioned in the http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/south-central-region/556645-texas-statewide-gathering-thread-11.html that I would start a thread, but was waiting for a good time. I think the same spot I mentioned before would be a good spot. Its a new HUGE park in SE Austin, easy access to all major highways, pavilion for shade and lots of parking(see photo). I can still ask my cousin with the body shop to sponsor the pavilion rental fees or start a pot for donations, but this would have to be determined early. Also, for food we need to decide about pot-luck or putting together a pool of $ for food. I'm fine w/ hotdogs and

Features: Shelter, Restrooms, Playscape, Fishing pond, power outlet, big BBQ pit, plenty of parking!
Shelter Fee: $75 per day + $10 non-refundable fee + $50 deposit
$135 up front
$85 after deposit refund.
*Satellite photo attached. We could find a sponsor to cover the shelter costs(I used to do this alot when coaching little league) and take volunteers for meat to grill.

Here's what I think needs to happen, listed in chronological order:
1) Decide on date, depending on whats available.
2) Find sponsor for park fees.
3) Call and reserve park shelter for date decided upon.
4) Try to find sponsor for food. (Maybe sponsor for food/ shelter).
5) Further planning between local clubs/orgs for attendance and road trip.

My concern with that location, is that it is very much off the Interstate. Duke's was great for its ease of access, for the out-of-town people. Not bad IF people use the Toll Road I guess, but I'm not gonna require anyone to pay just to drive on a road, when there are already plenty of roads that our taxes have paid for. Don't get me started on toll roads like 620, that OUR money already built, but were turned into toll roads to collect even more money.

Seems like we could find something closer to I35.

I started this thread because I was starting to get people asking about the 2011 State Gathering.

Posted by: flu_by_u Jan 4 2011, 12:28 PM

The park is on HWY71, ~10min from IH35, ~10min from HWY183, which means pretty much in Austin. People could use the toll road but its not like the park is on the toll road.

It can't be 10 min for 183 AND 10 min from I35. Impossible. 183 is in between the park & I35. And no way it is 10 min from I35. So maybe 10 min from 183 & 20 min to I35.

Some people will have already driven for hours. 20 min may not be much, but lets not drag out their driving any further than needed. People already objected to using the Toll Road last year, so they won't quite like using it this year either.

I appreciate your suggestion, but that is not quite what will work for this.

I know there aren't any parks right on I35, so we'll have to settle on something off the interstate, but I know we can find something closer in. There is on not 100 feet from I35 by Parmer & Lamar. Equal(ish) travel from people coming from North & South of Austin.

~15min to park from IH35, 40% of that time if coming down/up from HWY183.
I'm sure people would be willing to "drag" the drive out more for convenience, shade, parking, clean restrooms, and more grass for activities.

Thanks for your suggestion. I'm still gonna look more centralized or north, since the majority of out-of-town travelers would be coming from longer distances & from the north.

I need out-a-towners' input so I can ask my cousin if he will cover the park fee. I don't want to ask w/o deciding on a location. I'm sure he will want to take out one of his trophy winning rides as advertisement.

I am willing to put in work to make this gathering turnout as-good if not better than last years. Let me know if my help is needed. As of now, I am sitting aside to let the "creator of the gathering" drive.

If you want a park, what about san gabriel in georgetown?

or old settlers park in Round rock?

Posted by: flu_by_u Jan 5 2011, 08:06 AM

I haven't been to those parks in about 10yrs. From the google satellite photos, they look fine. The only problem I see w/ them is not alot of parking. That may have changed since the satellite photos were taken. I only say park, because it is a good, chill environment. Good for games, kids, and pets.

San Gabriel is just 2 minutes from Duke's, so real easy to find. For $70, we can get covered seating for 75-100 people, a BBQ pit & our own parking area. $50 without the BBQ pit.

But if we cooked our own food.....Who is going to do the cooking? Who is gonna bring the plates? Forks? Knives? Drink cups? Liquids to drink? Meat? Sides? Who is gonna prepare the sides? Ice chests for the food & drinking? Ice for food & drinks? Lots of little things to add up. One reason we didn't try that last year.

I say that we just have Duke's (or whoever) cater it.

At Old Settler's Park, only 1 of their places has restrooms for $100, the other gets porta-potties if you rent those. Old Settlers Park is where the first ATGO meet was held out a LONG time ago (before StevenK was even involved & ATGO kinda fell apart then StevenK brought it back together).

I like what I'm hearing, what are your ideas for how to pay for the food from dukes. that's always been a big sticking point

RJ thinks he can get Sponsors. I don't think we could possibly count on that & certainly not without knowing the number of people coming

For catered food & park rental, I say we charge a Registration Fee & if we wanna do awards/trophies, we need to get Classes & Judges. Getting Trophies/Awards made isn't a problem, since my old job does that stuff all the time. Pretty sure they won't do it for free/sponsor that part, since that is what they do for business, make that kinda stuff. They have bills & employees.

Posted by: 58mark Jan 5 2011, 10:06 AM

do what you can but remember this. I think the only beef anybody have the dukes last year was the heat. avoid the summer months and you could have all the best parts of last year without the worst by keeping it at dukes.

Cheaper on everyone too.

Posted by: flu_by_u Jan 5 2011, 10:43 AM

Yes heat was a BIG problem. Fall sounds good. Duke's sounds good for food. I don't remember much about parking at Duke's, but was there enough parking for more attendance than last yrs? Also, what if we had food at Duke's then a cruise to the park of choice so we can play some games. I'm a big fan of washers, horse shoes, volleyball. That means no need to raise money for food, use trees for shade(canopies if ppl have them), ppl bring their own drinks.

Posted by: StevenK Jan 5 2011, 10:53 AM

Pinned the topic so its at the top.

As for charging registration, I personally am against that. I would rather have a free park, or chill in a parking lot than have to pay to come to the meet.

I am in the same boat.

Posted by: Stephen Jan 5 2011, 11:26 AM

The parks themselves are free. The covered tables are not.

But without $ coming in (registration/whatever) we aren't going to get any trophies/awards/whatever. Which is fine by me, but others might want it/might increase attendance.

Parking was quite adequate at Duke's & even better if we don't allow canopies in the parking area.

I'm liking the idea of doing it in May/June, instead of Fall, since that would be 8-9 months away from now.

Posted by: Stephen Jan 5 2011, 11:41 AM

Looking over rainfall records online.....May seems to be the highest, June a little less, then May less than that (and 11 degrees cooler).

I say lets do it in May. Just 4 months away, but we can do that.

Posted by: 58mark Jan 5 2011, 11:54 AM

one advantage of waiting until the fall... It gives local groups to really get the word out in their owns areas.. for example, houston always does a big summertime event, and could push the statewide event while they have everybody in one place. Same goes for the Dallas group, but we have a better internet based group, and can get the word out either way

may or may not be a big deal

One way to have registration free and still have trophies and other swag is to either have sponsors, or only charge a fee to those who want to enter their car for consideration for judging... that's the fair way. If you don't want to be judged, you dont need to be charged, because you aren't taking home a trophy anyway.

I'd love to see enough categories for judging that many people can get excited about bring their cars... Survivor class, V6, in addition to the regular classes... you could check out the Fbody gathering site out of atlanta for ideas.

May is cool.... not too late, not too early

Posted by: flu_by_u Jan 5 2011, 12:00 PM

May is fine for me. We gonna cruise to the park after eating or chill in Dukes parking lot the whole time?

Posted by: topduarte Jan 7 2011, 10:30 AM

For the Mopar club we have here in Austin, we usually had our gatherings at one of the parks.

Some brought a grill and everybody brought their meats they wanted cooked and their own drinks.

Everyone like to hang out at parks and BS, droll over each others cars, play horseshoes, washers, etc.

Kids IMO get bored at car shows that are at restaurants within an hour.

Pick a park with a pool and that makes everyone happy.

Just my $.02!

Posted by: zimmstoy Jan 7 2011, 02:08 PM

There is a park on the north side of town lake near riverside - right on the water if I recall correctly. They used to do the LoneStar Round Up there before it got really big and moved to the expo center. Not sure what would be involved to find out about it, but I always remember havinga great time out there. Room for a few hundred cars.

Posted by: marc Jan 7 2011, 07:42 PM

I'm down for duke's again but I agree with every one that it was just way to hot last year. I vote that we start at Duke's and eat and what not then cruise to a park or what ever. I'm down for the pool idea if we can find one that is free or cheap.

Posted by: Stephen Jan 7 2011, 07:55 PM

How about a river instead of a public pool? GT has a great swimming hole not 5 min away from Duke's. Personally? I love rivers/lakes over chlorine swimming pools ANY day! Just gotta check on parking over there, since I haven't been in awhile & I know they made some changes to it.

Posted by: marc Jan 7 2011, 08:52 PM

I'd be down for that

Posted by: 58mark Jan 8 2011, 04:59 PM

I think a plan is needed for promotion. Typically these things suffer a terrible sophomore slump. People who showed up the first year out of novelty aren't that interested in the second year.

Other than getting the word out on TGO and local groups like this one, what else can be done?

Advertising, radio/TV/internet ads, which I can't afford, so word of mouth I guess it is.

Posted by: flu_by_u Jan 9 2011, 03:36 PM

Flyers!!! I always see flyers for these kinda things at HEB's, Rudy's BBQ, Vatozone, Oreillys.

Posted by: 58mark Jan 9 2011, 05:33 PM

here's some websites for other fbody gatherings around the country. Looking through them might give you some interesting ideas of ways to expand the festivities to a broader appeal, increasing participation

http://www.fbodybeachbash.com/index.php
http://www.fbodygathering.com/

I realize the audience for a third gen only event will be smaller than third gens only, but it's worth looking at other gatherings for inspiration

Without doubt, people need to feel that they are getting involved in something that is organized, and it's worth their time to drive 3, 4 or even 6 hours to get there to be a part of it.

I think offering something with events on a friday night and Saturday morning is worth looking at.

Posted by: 58mark Jan 9 2011, 06:05 PM

I'm willing to purchase a domain name and design a website to help us promote this and future events. Witha website we can get the event listed on websites that list car shows, and make promotion much easier

here's some names that are available....

these first two have the advantage of not seeming regional

thirdGenGathering.com
3rdGenGathering.com

if we want to make it regional, we have to decide on what the region is... broadening it might encourage others from OK, LA, and AR to attend

southcentral3rdGens.com
Texas3rdGens.com
3rdGensofTexas.com

this one is a little different, but I kind of like it...

8292thirds.com

couple more with a regional theme

3rdGenRoundup.com
ThirdGenRoundup.com

ok, feedback time!

I would love to make a bigger event out of the meet. I am all for that...

As for my spot... I will know by tonight or tomorrow. I have a lot going on right now with personal stuff but I need to start making some time for myself before I go nuts.
The spot I am talking about is only fit for about 45 cars at the most. So if we are planning on a bigger than last year turn out this may not work. I dont care if we charge for the trophy stuff... entry fee would be what?

Dukes food was okay. As long as its not hot. A park is a better idea. Im sorry but having a BBQ with water near by beats eating there and then driving somewhere else.

I think the town lake idea is cool... so would be the georgetown park idea Steven had.

The Georgetown park is under 2min away. Lots of shade, so not far at all. Parking for 45 shouldn't be too bad & we can get creative to pack in a few more cars, just not another 45! lol.gif

Posted by: 58mark Jan 10 2011, 12:48 PM

I'm all for having a scenic location, one with shade...but if we are going to consider having anything on private land and forget about dukes,..

The question that has to be addressed, and nobody, including me, has a good answer for, is where is any food for the day going to come from?
BYOeverything?
Cater?
BBQ ourselves?
sponsorship money to buy food ahead of time?
Rich benefactor?
or do we just forget food, and if somebody gets hungry we say... "arby's is down the street, have a good time"

Lol - just my luck they all show this year.

Catering works. But then we are back to charging for admission. Unless someone wants to foot the bill. lol
BBQ works, given we have someone go shopping before hand with coordinated shopping skills and some cash prepaid.

The only thing I can see being an issue is if more cars show up than planned. I am going to release the details of the location privately after I talk to them. I dont think its going to be a problem, just want to give them that respect.

If not, the park 2mins from dukes works for me. I think we need to get back to basics here first. How big are we going to go this year? If we want a huge outcome, which I think we do - then we should forget a private lot. What are we doing here?

obviously I think we should shoot for the largest 3rdgen crown we can get. when we outgrow dukes and have a track record, then it will be easier to get corporate funding to allow us to grow to a different location

one thing I think should be considered is a location at a hotel with a large parking lot, that also happens to be near a few restaurants. That way you have food and comfort, but you also have the ability to plan more events, and stretch it to a two day event.
One thing about Having it at Dukes was we planned it at a time that we knew the parking lot would be empty. Have it at a hotel, and you can plan a longer day with more events.

one thing I think should be considered is a location at a hotel with a large parking lot, that also happens to be near a few restaurants. That way you have food and comfort, but you also have the ability to plan more events, and stretch it to a two day event.
One thing about Having it at Dukes was we planned it at a time that we knew the parking lot would be empty. Have it at a hotel, and you can plan a longer day with more events.

Sounds good to me then. I was under the impression this was mainly an Austin meet... my bad. We need to combine Dallas and Houston then, which then I ask - Why do they have a meet when were in the middle and they want a bigger turnout as well? Sorry if im playing catch up guys... I try to be more of a part of this stuff but lately im helping a parent with cancer.

You forget the title of this thread? "Second Annual TEXAS STATE Gathering"? That pretty much implies it is for the whole state not just Austin. We had people from Amarillo to Houston & everywhere in-between come last year.

Of course, anyone from anywhere is welcome to come, even from out-of-state, if they wanna come.

Yes I know the title and I was there last year. I do remember a few from out of town. This still leaves my question remaining, why is there a meet in every city if this is the big kahuna?

Here is how close the park is to Duke's.

Sometimes we get tired of looking at the same cars in our own cities, and like meeting new people and seeing new cars. Austin was picked because the populations of all the major cities in texas can get there in less than 3 hours.

of course, that didnt stop the houston guys from compaining....

I'm willing to purchase a domain name and design a website to help us promote this and future events. Witha website we can get the event listed on websites that list car shows, and make promotion much easier

here's some names that are available....

these first two have the advantage of not seeming regional

thirdGenGathering.com
3rdGenGathering.com

if we want to make it regional, we have to decide on what the region is... broadening it might encourage others from OK, LA, and AR to attend

southcentral3rdGens.com
Texas3rdGens.com
3rdGensofTexas.com

this one is a little different, but I kind of like it...

8292thirds.com
couple more with a regional theme

3rdGenRoundup.com
ThirdGenRoundup.com
ok, feedback time!

Ok guys, I was serious. If we are going to have a website, we need to pick a domain name that we want to use in association with this gathering for years to come. there are things I like about every one of those names above, so I can't pick my favorite, amd wouldnt want to.
tell me which ones you like, and why, or come up with more options

I think we need to use something easily to connect to our 3rd gen world. With 3rdGen or ThirdGen in the name. And Texas, if we mainly aren't aiming for South Central Region, just Texas.

With that said, my thoughts on them:

Good for a Texas Gathering.....
ThirdGenRoundUp.com
3rdGenRoundUp.com
Texas3rdGens.com <-- Gets my vote or TexasThirdGens.com, but I prefer the 3rdgen version. Or Texas3rdGenGathering.com? Without 'Gathering', it could try to turn into a TexasTGO.org.

Not bad, but......
8292birds.com <--Good for a national site like TGO, not just a Gathering

Good if we took it Regional not just Texas
southcentral3rdGens.com

Both good for National Gathering.....
thirdGenGathering.com
3rdGenGathering.com

You've hit on my favorites here...
I like the word roundup because it does two things... it conveys a regional atmosphere without alienating any of those who would interested in the event, but might get put off by thinking it's for Texans only. it's easy to carry the theme too far, until it's a corny sheplers characture of itself, but it can be done right

Of course the two others are good, I lean toward spelling out third because that's the way that most regional and national groups do it, I can't think of any place that uses the numerical spelling

as far as TexasTGO.org... i smiled at that one because the O already stands for ORG, as in the domain name, but for our uses it could actually stand for Organization, and in that case I would want to use dot com, not dot org, so it doesn't sound like we are stuttering... biggrin.gif

OK, there's more of my thoughts... I still want to hear more... everybody help us narrow these down!

ATGO can always host the website if ya'll want. You can even use a custom domain if you want (I'm not paying for it, I can barely afford to keep this site up), or I can just give you a sub-domain live statewide.austinthirdgen.org or something like that for free. Either way I've got plenty of space/bandwidth to host for this.

Again, I'm putting my opinion, we need to concentrate on keeping this free, so no catering or anything like that. If we don't go somewhere with food, we need to make a food list and have people sign up to bring some food or drinks as their "admission"

The only difference between Dukes catering or eating at Dukes, would be pre-paying or paying at Dukes. Slight difference in choosing what people get, but we've already settled on eating at Dukes like last year. Only real difference is cooler weather, by changing the date, and going to the park for more shade after eating. I might get the Reserved Parking Lot over there for us, so that we aren't scattered into 1 long line, side by side, with park goers mixed in here & there among our cars.

Mark is handling the website portion, so I'll let him decide on that.

Do we have a sign up thread on here yet. So we can keep track of how many people from our club are going to be there. I can get there early seeing as my parents live right down the street and I can save parking for our club if I know how many people will be there from ATGO that way ATGO can be all in one area. I'll be there plus two and sporting the 1993 Ford Probe GT Since I sold my bird two years ago sad.gif

I'd suggest making the sponsor logos on the main roundup page clickable. Each logo could direct you to the appropriate sponsor's webpage, like on the sponsor page.

I wish I could, everything you see in the header and on the right hand side is just 1 big image I made in photoshop. Im restricted by a pretty basic template because i'm no HTML wizard

Posted by: BigBadLou Jan 20 2011, 11:26 AM

Maybe I could help.
You got two basic options here:
1) split the images and make each clickable with the right link
2) use the combo image but put a clickable "map" over it

I would suggest #1 because it is much easier to implement.

If you need help with the html, let me know. Feel free to PM me the source for the main page, I can modify it, test it out locally and then send it back to you.

I wish I could. The template is very restrictive, and the only thing I can change is the background you already see, the text field you already see, and the names on the navigation menu. The only reason the facebook image is clickable is because it's located in the the text area

Posted by: BigBadLou Jan 20 2011, 12:52 PM

If you are limited by some templates as to where you can place text, why not make the pictures part of the text? They could be maybe at the very top of the text, next to each other. If they are small enough (their current size looks good), they won't be too intrusive. And afterall, we are trying to advertise our sponsors so the pictures should be in plain sight. smile.gif

Lou

Posted by: 58mark Jan 20 2011, 01:00 PM

I was trying to do something with the right side of the page, it looked boring. I could add some text with a link encouraging visitors to go to the sponsor page.

Posted by: Stephen Jan 20 2011, 01:30 PM

I turned my sig pic for the Roundup, into a clickable link. Could you do the Advertiser's that way?

I know they would hafta be separate images, but maybe that is possible to do & still keep the layout the same?

Posted by: 58mark Jan 20 2011, 01:44 PM

I have 3 choices with this website template.

1. leave the images on the right hand side as a non clickable image.

2. move them to the middle of the page, making the middle crowded in the right hand side blank.

3. delete them from the front page entirely.

I can make images clickable, just not images that are outside the editable areas. (see the facebook image)

We should also look into getting flyers printed (with the sponsors on them) to put at car parts places and whatnot...

I'm specifically asking the sponsors not to send me money. I would rather have them offer up merchandise credit so the winners can deal directly with them. I don't want it to appear in any way that I'm making any money off this. In exchange for the merchandise credit, I'm giving them the ad space on the website, and of course the thanks and public appreciation that goes with it

Since I made the announcement about the fuel injector company, three people have posted on TGO about what a great experience they have had with that company. A years worth of ad space and all the publicity for a small store credit.... not bad at all

Sorry, I'm still a newbie here... who's rex?

Any ideas on where we could cruise to, after Duke's? If it had a good enough destination to shoot pics, the longer/further the drive could be.

I would love to do Lime Creek but it is pretty short, for such a drive.

1431 would lots of fun, but a GOOD location at the end for pics?

Considering it starts at 1pm, that seems a little too late to eat then drive that far, with all the non-ATGO people having to drive 3+- hours from Dukes to get home to Dallas/Arlington or Houston. If we headed over to 1431/Lime Creek area, that would just make their drive home that much longer.

I don't care where we go, but it would be great to find somewhere that's a 30-45 drive, and at the end has an awesome scenic view that we can take individual pics of our cars against a backdrop.

I've seen a couple of those links before, but none are near Georgetown, just the "Austin area" & most west od 183, which brings my biggest concern into question again....Moving 50+- cars together, through red lights & Saturday afternoon traffic. Getting separated isn't a big deal for the ATGO crowd. We know where we are. NTTGA & Houston people? Many would be lost.

Maybe we should just keep it the way it is now (Duke's & the park) and move the event for next year, with the extra time to plan a cruise?

I'd love that too, but wouldn't we all have to pay to park?

What I really would like to see is someplace we can park for free, and take cool pictures of our cars. It doesnt bother me about traffic lights, but the more highway percentage of the trip, the better. And i'd also like to avoid tolls.

So there's no place north of downtown we can go and park our cars? I wouldn't even mind lake travis, not too far for me

Posted by: Stephen Jan 27 2011, 06:21 PM

If we wanna drive, and it is sounding like people won't mind the drive.....

I say we go straight out 29 to Bertram, left on 1174, left on 1431 and takes us right to the funnest section of 1431. Stop at the lake in Jonestown for pics & plenty of seating & parking at the park. 1431 would also take everyone straight back to IH35 to head north or south, to go home. And only like 2 red lights to break us up.

We'd hafta check out the area for pics & a good background.

Or Lime Creek, but that is further into Austin & many more traffic lights & Saturday shopping traffic to deal with. No big areas to park & take pics either, that I know of.

To watch the moonrise or sunset or to take pictures of the Austin skyline, drive out to 2901 Capital of Texas Highway (Loop 360), where Loop 360 intersects MoPac. The northeast parking lot has been outfitted for moon gazers, complete with trash receptacles and a bench. Still, watch out for the red ants if you're sitting on the grass. Also watch the sunset from the parking lot of St. Luke's on the Lake, a church overlooking Lake Travis with some of the best lake views. stepen, when you are scouting locations... will you do me a favor and check out this place too... it sounds really nice, especially the part about a PARKING LOT overlooking the lake

might be a great way to get a group shot, at least those of us that are hardy enough to make the drive

Barton Creek Mall. Boring ass drive, to the opposite corner of Austin. Georgetown = Northeast, Barton Creek Mall = Southwest

I've got an idea for a close by area with dramatic background.
Texas Crushed Stone is a huge gravel pit with possibly some cool photo ops.
Not much of a cruise (maybe that's a good thing). 6 miles south on IH-35 and 1 mile west on FM1431.
I wonder if they would give us permission?

Got a connection there to ask?

I have no contact, it was just a thought. The 4 miles of solid rock border along the access road is pretty impressive.

actually I meant St luke's on the lake... it's at lake travis, right next to the first location you mapped

the gravel pit sounds awesome!

If we want to cruise to the Capital there is a parking lot on 11th just west of Congress that is free on the weekends and would be big enough to accommodate all of us but I don't know about being able to take pictures? Let me see if I can find it on Google and ya'll can decide.

Yeah, I didn't know it was going to be that long biggrin.gif but it looks like a nice size parking lot and we might be able to get a few pictures of our cars with the capital behind it... I can't remember how thick the trees are on the corner though?? Maybe some one could go scout it out?? I know of another place that has plenty of parking and a nice view of down town but you would have to call the place that owns the parking garage and ask if they would mind us using it as it is privet property.

Their information is below...

Hyde Park Baptist Church
3901 Speedway
Austin, TX 78751-4699

i'm confused.. the capitol is 3 miles away from that church...

????

Posted by: BigBadLou Jan 28 2011, 09:31 AM

I corrected the bad Google iframe links.
Next time, just copy the link from Google and paste it here, don't use their "Insert this thing" feature, it doesn't work.

Posted by: marc Jan 28 2011, 10:37 AM

Yeah they are close to each other but I think the church would give us better views for pictures then being next to the capital and the possibility of being blocked by trees and not having a clear view of the capital. I'm probably not helping much but I'm just suggesting some places that I know of that we could get pictures of our cars and the Austin sky line.

Thanks for the edit Lou

That would be great! there's some great ideas being thrown around on this thread, but I still think the state capital is the ultimate photo op

Posted by: marc Jan 28 2011, 11:23 AM

I wonder what it would take to get the parking spaces on Congress between 11th and 10th? then we could park on both sides and stand at 10th and get a picture of all our cars right in front of the capital. Just an idea lol...

Here's another thought.... What about going to one of the parking garages on the UT campus, have everybody go up to the roof top parking, and give everybody a choice of what they want in the background the picture, either memorial stadium or the capitol. You could probably do either from there, with a nice view

Posted by: marc Jan 28 2011, 09:49 PM

That would be cool but we'd have to go through UT for permission I think?

to get a picture of one of their buildings? (in the case of the capitol not even one of theirs)

If you're in a public place (like the roof of a parking garage) you can take as many pictures you want of anything you want

To me the only hangup would be we might have to have each person in the caravan pay a couple bucks to get out of the the parking garage, assuming we were there for just an hour or so. weekends might be free... I don't know

Posted by: 58mark Jan 30 2011, 03:37 PM

Stephen, I know you've already had your fill with the parks dept, but here's another idea
This one was in one of the lincs Marc posted...
Look up Russell park at the north fork of the san gabriel river. It's only ten minutes away from dukes, and it looks like it has about 40 spaces right next to the water. I know there would probably be lights between the two, but maybe we can find a nice scenic route to get there so we get some cruising time

other options to check out:

Rooftop of parking garages at UT, looking for views of the capitol and memorial stadium, and checking to see if parking is free on the weekend

the jonestown route you posted earlier

Texas Crushed Stone. Need to find out if we can take pictures on a saturday, and if it's worth taking pictures of

St luke's on the lake

possible parking lots near the capitol

if the San Gabriel view is nice, there might not be much a reason to go all the way out to south west Austin

Posted by: marc Jan 30 2011, 05:43 PM

We could look in to the LBJ parking lot on Red River and MLK I think it is? The LBJ Library has a huge parking lot and I think its free on the weekends but not sure.

Russell Park on GT lake is a great, or was years ago. Haven't been there in years. EDIT: I was thinking of Jim Hogg Park, not Russell.

Russell is on the opposite side of the lake from Duke's & I know there are a couple parks on the same sides as Duke's. I'll look into those parks Wouldn't be a bad country road cruise out to those parks either.

The Jonestown Park I posted about earlier is completely free. Only people parking trucks & truck trailers hafta pay for truck parking, after launching their boat.

Posted by: 58mark Jan 30 2011, 06:28 PM

The reason i keyed on russell was because it seemed to have the largest parking lot of all the places around the lake. Distance isnt a concern, i actually think it's too close, i'm hoping to have a nice cruise between dukes and whereever we wind up. You could have some fun finding the best route to get there, but at the same time giving us something interesting to look at

What's the view like from there? Very busy at 3pm on a saturday?

I'll check out all 3 parks. Cedar Breaks looks to have a nice long line of parking along the lake front, but getting 50+- parking spots together, on the lake, on a nice Summer afternoon? Not gonna happen! lol.gif We'll be close, but not lined up side by side.

I'll look for good photo shoots spots, since that seems to be what people are wanting instead of a cruise. Pics are just pics. I enjoy driving mine.

I want both!

I looked up the overhead on cedar breaks, and you're right, there's about 60 parking spaces. None of them have a view of the water for pics, but we could probably use the boat launch ramp that is right there.. might be a cool shot.

Let us know what you find out Stephen. I'd love to get a nice little drive in between duke's and the photo shoot, but if that doesn't happen it's not the end of the world

wow, 1fast92 (robbie) put a short mention about the thirdgen roundup in a craigslist ad he put up to sell some engine parts, and we've gotten a few dozen hits on the website from it.

I'm going to start placing ads in march for things I wouldn't mind selling (but not at prices that they will sell fast if you know what I mean) and put a plug to the roundup in every ad.

Anybody here do any CL selling and wouldn't mind plugging the roundup in the austin/Sanantonio area? I could do it myself, with the hook being that I can deliver the items to the roundup for those not in Dallas, but it might be better coming from somebody in the area

Posted by: flu_by_u Feb 10 2011, 10:06 PM

I think this is gonna turn out awesome!!!! Thank y'all for keeping this up. As for scouting parking garages. I may have a chance this Saturday. Last weekend was horrible. I got t-boned in my Yukon. So now the Camaro is my daily driver. My son has t-ball practice on Saturday, right near Downtown. Perfect opportunity for me to get some photos of the Camaro at the parking garages. Too bad my bird is still down. weep.gif

Posted by: flu_by_u Feb 13 2011, 03:30 PM

So I went and scoped out some parking garages on Saturday. Here are some photos from what I think is a good candidate. Its easy access too if we're coming from the northside. Just take MLK to San Jacinto, turn left, and the garage is two blocks down on the right. That garage is normally used for UT football games, so given that the meet isn't during football season, I think it may be available. I'll get with my buddy that works for the State. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=17th+and+san+jacinto+austin+tx&aq=&sll=30.278433,-97.736548&sspn=0.001838,0.002411&gl=us&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=San+Jacinto+Blvd+%26+E+17th+St,+Austin,+Travis,+Texas+78701&ll=30.278819,-97.736531&spn=0.001838,0.002411&t=h&z=19

please find out if it's available for us to use, and if there would be a charge to get in for an hour or so

thanks man, you rock!

Posted by: 58mark Feb 13 2011, 07:04 PM

by the way, we had a large NTTGA meeting tonight, and we talked about the roundup. most are coming, but the rea excitement and buzz happened when I told them we were planning a photoshoot. People were seriously interested in it then, evne if they were mild about it before

Keep up the great work guys, this event is going to be awesome!

Posted by: flu_by_u Feb 13 2011, 08:31 PM

I guess there were no events going on yesterday that required the garage to be used as parking because it was wide open!!! There were no guards, no people, and hardly any cars inside. Oh and the exhaust echo while cruising to the top was awesome. I can just imagine the sound of having a line of thirdgens running thru the garage!!!!

Posted by: 58mark Feb 13 2011, 08:38 PM

very cool. I wonder if it's possible to find out about events going on in that area on the afternoon of roundup date. If we know something major is happening we could abort that idea and try something else

Posted by: 58mark Feb 23 2011, 07:40 AM

hey RJ, I'd like to be able to announce something on the photoshoot soon. Is there some way to research the availability of the garage on may 21st?

I'd hate to announce something, and then find out it's not available

ok guys... give me some feedback.... kevin89formula is going to be taking care of our decals, and he just sent me two samples. the first one is larger, with the shape of the logo cut out. I think it looks better against a tinted window than the regular rectangular one.

the other one would look better against a lighter background (not black) like if you were going to put it on a fridge, toolbox, or a non tinted window

I'm not sure why they are two different sizes. I like the larger one better, I'll have to ask kevin if it's possible to get the rectangular one in the larger size

give me some feedback on these if you do plan on using a decal, which one do you like better?

Posted by: 58mark Mar 1 2011, 04:57 PM

if I can get the rectangular one in the larger size, would you rather have it, or the cut out one?

Posted by: BigBadLou Mar 1 2011, 05:00 PM

I seem to favor the cutout sticker for some reason.
Will we be handing these out ASAP to advertise the gathering? Or will they be distributed at the gathering to promote it for the next year?

Lou

Posted by: 58mark Mar 1 2011, 05:07 PM

considering we're getting these for free, I don't want to be greedy and ask for hundreds for promotion. I'm hoping to get 100 for each goodie bag we will be putting together.

If I can't get that many, I'm going to personally give one to each person that brings a thirdgen.

these things are very nice. the vinyl is sturdy enough that I took it off and on several surfaces cleanly, and it never stretched or tore.

Posted by: Stephen Mar 1 2011, 05:17 PM

100 per goodie bag? Not 1 or 2 person/car?

It'd be cool to mail a batch to one person per ATGO/NTTGA/HFB/etc., to distribute to that area. And I'd think before the Roundup, to help dvertise it.

duh... my bad.

100 FOR the goodies bags...

let me see how many I can get without pissing off the person providing them

Posted by: Stephen Mar 1 2011, 05:46 PM

100 will be enough for 2 per person, if the count is correct come May 21 (which it won't be but....), with extras.

I wouldn't ask for many more, if any.

Posted by: 58mark Mar 1 2011, 08:42 PM

Robbie had a good idea tonight... he's always good for that

Give one (their choice of style) to each person that brings a thid gen, an sell the rest for a small fee... That way the person who makes them gets a little bit for his trouble.

I like that idea. Can actually see in person before deciding which one.

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT TIME!

I've set up a partnership with Kirk at Johnnydees.com

http://johnnydees.com/camaroparts.htm

He and his dad have a great website with TONS of third gen parts, some of them NOS. the only problem is, he's not near anybody, so getting the parts is a problem.

I've arranged with him that he's going to come to the roundup and deliver any parts you need right to georgetown. He's also going to bring some of his nicer inventory of hard to find items that you may just be tempted to buy when you see what he's got.

I'm really excited about this, some of these parts are hard to find, but he's going to bring them right to us.

Please check out his website and contact Kirk at the email adress on the contact page, or just call him directly

Don't let the pop-up on his website bother you... they are getting out of the business of selling dodge parts, and are going all 3rd gen, all the time. Sounds like a business that could be a great resource for years to come in Texas. I've looked over his website, and I think his prices are reasonable for what he's offering. I would say that he's at or below what most people who parts out cars charge, plus you have the benefit of not having to drive all the way to his place to pick them up.

I think he's talking about $3 each or 2 for $5. pretty reasonable for the quality of them

Posted by: flu_by_u Mar 7 2011, 01:45 PM

I have been to Kirk's place. He is a real down-to-earth, country guy. He has a Bad a$$ IROC just sitting in his storage building!!! He has lots of hard to find items, stored in their original packaging. I had told him about our last state gathering. Since we had a good turnout last year, maybe he will be convinced to bring that IROC. There's a funny story that Mr. Hudson and I could share about trying to find his place because the directions on his site are misleading. So if has no problem with me posting directions, I can do that.

I don't believe Scott or 383stroker1992 have more than one 3rdgen.
Actually, I can't even find 383stroker1992 as a member here on ATGO so not sure who that is and cannot vouch for that person.

Lou

Same as RJ (flu_by_u)....Bringing 2 cars

Posted by: BigBadLou Mar 15 2011, 09:56 AM

Well, RJ does have two cars and wants to bring them both - he will bring a second driver.
So RJ is an exception. smile.gif

Yes I have 2 cars and plan on bringing them both. So it is 2cars, 2drivers.

nice! I've put a few flyers on third gens I found in parking lots, but nothing in parts stores yet. I'm not sure that putting a stck of flyers in a countertop (which is what oreilly does here) really targets the audience

There's this house in Westlake that had a 91-92 GTA parked in front of it. I had been meaning to stop by and drop off a flyer. Well today I did, but the GTA wasn't there and there was a different car in its place but underneath a car cover. From the looks of the wheels and the front bumper shape....92 Firehawk????!!!!! It has the Firehawk wheels but the inserts are painted yellow, is that a factory option??? Hopefully he/she shows up!

ok RJ, you've done it... you've gotten everybody all in a dizzy about an escort to the photoshoot. (I'm joking, a little LOL)

I really don't have time to spend hours on the phone trying to figure out how to make this happen. Does anybody have any contacts for a fast track to make it happen? we're talking crossing over county lines....

Posted by: Stephen May 9 2011, 10:27 PM

3 cities & 2 counties, so not the easiest. Could just use 1 group of Officers, but trying to get some that are off duty & use their patrol cars to do it, without paying them? If it was some sort of Charity, like we were raising $ for something while doing this....That would be one thing.

I can try, but I need to know where we are going. Address RJ?

here's the map I put together... ya'll help me decide which route we should take. one thing I like about this way is there is no traffic light when we turn left on colorado, and it's at a landmark that is easy to spot (blanton museum)

MLK is a busy street, so a left turn w/ no light is complicated for a group trying to stay together. Also, the garage is between 16th and 17th street w/ the entrance being on Colorado St. Also, I didn't notice til now that News8Austin is next door to the garage! Btw, if you want better coverage, I would suggest a real news station (network) instead of a cable station to cover the story. Business is slow in the news world nowadays so I'm sure they'd jump on a semi-interesting story of a bunch of rednecks driving through downtown, cars breaking down, blocking traffic ... smile.gif

thanks, I'll call them. I just need to sit down and write up a story angle that makes it sound newsworthy.

If anybody besides Lou wants to help, feel free to post up some suggestions.

Here's the main selling points as far as my perspective sees

1. Largest gathering of its kind in the southern United states, and perhaps the world

2. A gathering of classic amercian cars that aren't high dollar collectables yet, but most suspect they will be eventually

3. A large group of people who encourage each other to either restore their cars back to factory condition, or modify them them to make them something unique and special

ok, I'm spent... anybody else?

I think you got the rain chances reversed. If it's North Austin, it's usually -10% chance. If it rains anywhere in Texas (South Austin, East Austin, West Austin, Round Rock), it never rains in North Austin, it's a desert stretch in the middle of the rain zone. smile.gif

I really am not worried about the chance of rain. C'mon, this is Texas, how much does it rain here? smile.gif We hadn't seen any since January (at least here in North Austin) until last week. That was a surprise when we got 1/2" (and rest of Austin received 3.5").

Posted by: 58mark May 16 2011, 08:44 AM

So far I'm seeing 30% or less. Its still too far away to really know how bad its going to be. Until I see something that says 75% chance all day, I don't think we'll be postponing it

Posted by: BigBadLou May 16 2011, 08:48 AM

I agree, Mark.
The rain chances here in Central Texas get hyped up a week or so in advance and then they usually quickly diminish.
The meteorologists try to give us a sense of hope but it rarely actually works out. smile.gif

So yes, I wouldn't worry about rain until two days in advance or so.
But what is our contingency plan? Postpone? Or bring a lot of canopies? It was hard to schedule the meet in the first place, with many other events going on in all the different cities and clubs.
Depending on the type of rain, I would not necessarily cancel. Showers should be no problem but all-day drizzle (yeah right!) would spoil the meet, that's for sure.

Lou

Posted by: 58mark May 16 2011, 09:04 AM

My first instinct for a contengency plan is to see if we could get into the parking garage early, and just hang out on the lower levels if it's raining, and head to the top floor if the sun is shining long enough for us to take take pictures

RJ, can you find out if that's even an option?

Posted by: Stephen May 16 2011, 09:16 AM

That is a good idea Mark (lower levels for rain coverage).

I just hope that if it rains, that everyone can just enjoy the gathering of 3rd gens & not be "showing off" on the wet roads & crash themselves or others.

I just emailed Debbie, but when I spoke to here initially, she mentioned that she'd have the "garage" cleared for us.

*****UPDATE*****
Debbie says the email has been sent out for all state employees to keep the top and "floor-under-top" floor clear.

that's great! If it wasn't for a lack of food and drinks, I would say a covered gathering would be anice FIRST option.

Ok, we're on for the 21st no matter what, but I have a feeling it's not going to rain enough to bother us. if rain does move in, we'll head to the garage.

Posted by: flu_by_u May 16 2011, 01:05 PM

We need to come to an agreement on parking in the garage. The sun is gonna be out so we could find shade on the floor beneath also.
1) Do we all park up on the top floor first for a group pic upon entering the garage? Then move down a floor for shade.
2) Do we all park on the floor beneath first upon entering the garage. Then one-by-one go up for individual pics?
3) Do we all go to top and stay up on top?

BTW, I told Debbie we'd give her a nice pic for allowing us access to the garage for free. So maybe we could throw together a collage of some sort for her?

I would say since its going to be less than 90, we should just all park on top. It will make things easier for getting organized and cars lined up for the shoot

We'll make debby a nice slideshow or something as a thanks

Hello,
It kinda sucks that there is a Possibility of rain ! BUT at least it won't any where near 100 degrees that day......

Two items I thought of over the weekend, one good, one bad:

1. Has anyone thought of posting in this Saturday's Statesman paper the event on the Auto Classifeids section. I see every week some club or two post an event for that day or that following week.

2. I35 an Ben white will closed Saturday and Sunday so any people from San Antonio and South Texas will be stuck in South Austin. I would recommend posting to come up 183 or the toll on the east side of town from the Kyle area or head west on Slaughter from I35 to Mopac and north from there.

Hope this helps. Cannot wait!!! cool.gif

Posted by: BigBadLou May 16 2011, 05:48 PM

The toll road should be free when I35 is closed. Can somebody verify that, please?

If the I35 is closed again, does anybody know how much traffic congestion there will be downtown? Will we be able to get to the parking garage easily?

Posted by: flu_by_u May 16 2011, 06:05 PM

Eesh, I didn't think about that. Lemme do some research....

ok the tolls road will be free, so this could actually be a good thing for most people. It's most likely going to effect those coming from south austin, and those headed directly south after the photoshoot

Posted by: 58mark May 16 2011, 07:11 PM

here's a link that confirms the toll roads will be free

I doubt the HWY closure will back up traffic to downtown Austin. I have been there every Saturday, just north of the river, for baseball games at Festival beach and haven't seen it backed up.

Just want to remind them the roubdup is THIS saturday, and send them the link for the registration form/map

It also wouldn't be the worst idea to let them know about the highway construction

Volunteers? I could use some help

I really hate to say it but I'm not going to be able to attend. I have to take care of something this weekend. Damn! I sure was looking forward to showing off my trailer park hot rod too. Oh well, there's always next year.

Mark, I can contact the signed up ATGO members, np.

Eddy, too bad! I was looking forward to see the convertible. You can't reschedule your "something"?

Mark, another note, there is a typo in the PDF. The "licence plate" is spelled as "place". Not sure if it's a big problem.

Is the garage f body friendly? Most of those state garage have steep drives up to the upper levels and are narrow so it is difficult to go at an angle

Just want to make sure we dont scrape up any front ends. eekdance.gif

Posted by: BigBadLou May 18 2011, 06:47 PM

Looking at the garage in Google street view, it shows nice nearly flat entrance and exit. No problem for our cars, even the lowered ones.
Not sure about the interior layout, RJ will probably have a good answer because he visited the garage in person.

The garage should be theoretically empty on a weekend so we should have plenty extra room to maneuver around corners.

Mark, please update Jimncindy to +1 (it's actually Jim'n'Cindy smile.gif ).
Also, ThomasJ and TopDuarte confirmed. I believe Albani did as well.

Has anybody heard from Mister Hudson (Jon)? His convertible is in pieces, AFAIK, so I am not sure whether he will be making it. Especially since I recall him leaving on another tour of duty. Can anybody confirm?

Thanks
Lou

P.S.: Cross out FYRCHKN +1, Eddy can't make it in his new cool LT1 convertible. sad.gif

Dukes will seat 350, so we're ok there

I was more concerned about the parking situation, but all the latest "can't come" notices, it looks like we'll be ok. It's hard to tell because we don't know.what impact all the extra promotions outside of the forums will have.

We could have 50,, or 100. I just don't know

Yeah....I noticed you never took off Eddie (FYRCHKN), never added Jackie or made other changes I saw people post not coming. Simple to Edit the post to add or delete names. Makes the seat/parking count better for Duke's. Last year we were pushing it pretty good (only like rows open + the side row) & I don't doubt 50% more cars this year. Parking should be interesting.

We'd have a hard time getting 350 in our cars, limited to the parking spots in Duke's parking lot. Have you told Duke's what we might be expecting this year?

I'll get there early, as long as nobody hits me like last year. ARGH!

Posted by: 58mark May 18 2011, 10:06 PM

I talked to the manager, told him we would probably be between 100 and 150, but if it's more, they'll be ready

I didn't tale off eddy or add jackie because they cancel each other out, numbers wise

I'm sweating the parking. We may have to get creative with double parking. This will be the last year we have it at dukes

We'd still be only moving once, just parking a little further away from the restaraunt & not in their actual parking lot.

Duke's does do catering, so they could even bring all the food to the parking garage & we just do it all there, no moving at all.

Posted by: 58mark May 19 2011, 10:44 AM

I would feel funny about invading a private parking lot that we don't have prior permission to use. As far as dukes goes, this isn't a catered event. We would have had to set that up way in advance.

We'll start at dukes. If the weather is too bad to go out and look at cars, we'll head to the garage early. If the weather is great and the parking lot is slammed, we can do the same

I was referring to NEXT year, as far as parking at the other lot, Duke's catering etc., because you said this year would be the last at Duke's. And obviously we'd get permission first, rather to come out of Duke's & find 75+ cars had ben towed while we were eating.

ah... I gotcha. sorry, I've got a thousand details on my mind today

As far as the future goes, I'd love to find a place right off the highway, but in a parking lot with hundreds of spaces.

I'm still in favor of keeping it in austin because of the central location, but I was also thinking today that it might be nice to move it around... wouldn't a two day roundup right on the beach in galveston be cool? I'm staying there in two weeks on a high rise beach condo. I'll be scouting locations. The main problem with doing something like that is during the summer, you're forced into a two night stay

well, that's a conversation for another day... monday perhaps biggrin.gif

Guys, just a general remark: you gotta remember that we live in different times now, businesses are NOT here for us .... WE are here for THEM. If you keep this in mind, life becomes easier.

On another note: did the northeners want to meet by I35 in the Pflugerville area around 12:30 and depart together a few minutes later? Would the Titanic be a good place? (big parking lot with direct access to the hwy)
